Stamper’s Grill Pub
I had read that this place had recently updated their menu and since we had driven by it many times in the past and had never stopped; this seemed like a good time to check it out. While it wasn’t terribly impressive to look at, either inside or out, it was pretty crowded for a Tuesday night and not just in the bar area. There were many families with young kids, as well as a much ‘older’ crowd. We took this to be a good sign. We were greeted warmly and seated at the last booth available – lucky break for us!
It took a while to look over the large and very diverse menu, which included quite a few unusual-sounding items. In spite of how busy they were, our awesome server, Meredith, was there immediately to take our drink orders. She recited several specials and told us what the soup-of-the-day was. While we were trying to make our choices, we ordered one of the appetizers (1/2 price before 7pm) which was the warm pretzel bread (3 good-sized pretzel bread sticks) served with a warm, spicy cheese dip…..very good! The only negative we could find about the menu was that there were very few entrée choices. With the exception of the nightly specials (one entrée, one burger and one sandwich) and the Friday Fish Fry special (only on Fridays unfortunately), there was maybe only one or two entrees to choose from. We were okay with that though since there were several sandwiches and salads that sounded really good. As it turned out, I had 5 of the garlic-parmesan wings and the half size of the goat cheese and walnut salad. Mr. Z had a small dinner salad and the chicken cordon bleu sandwich. As much as I hate to say anything negative at all about Stamper’s, the salad SOUNDED way more exciting than it actually was. There was a substantial amount of romaine lettuce, a few walnuts, a very small amount of goat cheese, and one or two red onion rings. Sadly the balsamic vinaigrette dressing that came with it wasn’t very memorable either. Overall, it had way too much lettuce for the amount of toppings and was a little disappointing. The wings were okay. They weren’t the best I’ve ever had, but by far, not the worst either. Mr. Z said his sandwich was good, but compared to others like it that he’s had elsewhere, it scored about even.
We will definitely go back to Stamper’s – if for no other reason that to try some of the other menu items and because our server, Meredith, was perhaps one of the best we’ve ever encountered anywhere (and we’ve been to many 5-star restaurants). She was fun, friendly, knowledgeable and totally attentive! To be able to do that in a crowded restaurant when you’re juggling many tables (seemingly by herself), is no small feat and she pulled it off perfectly!
