Mario’s

26 September, 2017 | Sports Bar | By: Mrs Z

Well, after having tried this same place under the various names and owners (and a few different names with the same owner) over the past 10+ years; we were a little disappointed to find that (in our opinion) they still haven’t quite found the secret!

Having most recently operated under the name of CARIBBEAN COWBOY, Mario’s (indicative of an Italian theme……but NOT) is just another sports bar!  An extensive menu but in all honesty, the ONLY thing that we could credit them with is that their burgers tasted as fresh as they claim.  That was Mr. Zs choice on this visit (the Royalton Burger).  He said it was really, really good and probably close to a full pound.  Was it worth $11 though???  Great burgers can be had at many places for less than $11.  My spinach salad, on the other hand, left me very disappointed.  You’re probably thinking “how can one screw up a spinach salad”…..trust me my friends, if you’ve had as many of them as I have; you’d know that in addition to the ingredients, the dressing is absolute key!  In this case, the spinach used was not ‘baby’ spinach and the leaves were very tough and coarse (and hard to chew) and there was way too much spinach.  The mandarin oranges (again, in MY opinion) detracted from the overall flavor since there were way too many of them as well and not enough of anything else, plus they were mushy.  One of the secrets to a good salad is balancing out all of the ingredients and a good dressing.  This salad had neither.  In addition to the spinach salad, I also had an order of wings.  Unfortunately, they don’t sell them by the “6 pack” or full dozen.  The “order” is a “full pound” of buttermilk wings, then you can pick your sauce or dry rub.  I just had the Ranch flavored dry rub.  The wings, while meaty were so salty I had to skin them in order to eat them – another huge disappointment.  Last of all, we shared an order of the Bavarian Pretzels and while they were fresh, there was way too much salt on them and the “warm beer cheese” had absolutely no taste at all – not of beer OR cheese and at $6 for 2 pretzels….another disappointment!

Unless we’re really missing the mark; I’d give them less than a year before another re-make.
