Soho Chicken & Whiskey
PHENOMENAL!! That pretty much sums it up in one word. Though their menu isn’t very big, there are enough items to satisfy pretty much anyone. I mean, seriously…..who doesn’t love a deliciously juicy inside and amazingly crispy outside huge chicken breast, paired with a light, fluffy Belgian waffle accompanied by yummy maple syrup? What’s not to love!!!!!
I’m glad that we arrived when we did, because even on a cold, snowy Tuesday evening, the place filled up quickly with mostly large parties. They have a nice selection of beers and wines, but as the name implies, are known for their whiskey! Once seated, we were presented with 2 of the most delicious buttermilk biscuits I’ve had since my grandmother made them many years ago. These came along with some rosemary butter and a spread that resembled and tasted a little like apple butter, but had another fruit taste in there as well. Perfect on these biscuits and we could have stopped right there, they were so big.
Mr. Z had the ‘Mornin’ Chicken & Waffles and I made the mistake of talking him into adding the thigh to the breast that it came with (not realizing that we were going to have WAY too much food). As I said earlier, this chicken was simply amazing. So tender and juicy inside and the crispiest outside I’ve ever had. I can’t imagine anyone not loving this dish! My choice(s), on the other hand, were really bizarre but there were so many things that I wanted to try, it was hard to narrow it down, so instead of ordering the shrimp & grits (which was going to be my entrée choice), I picked 2 appetizers. I had read several reviews of the deviled eggs and while that may not be everyone’s cup of tea, I just had to try them. Unfortunately, Mr. Z doesn’t care for deviled eggs, so even the minimum order of 6 were all on me! Totally as described – delicious. The thing on their menu that I will probably rave about for months to come, however, are the fried green tomatoes! Again, this wouldn’t appeal to everyone, but honestly these were the most delicious things I’ve tasted in ages! They were done to perfection – tender without being mushy inside and crispy and hot outside. The toppings, however, were what put them over the top! One order was 4 slices and while that might not have sounded like too much, the creamy rich topping make this alone, a huge meal. Of course, I also nibbled on the extra chicken thigh that Mr. Z ordered, so by the time we were ready to leave, I had a hard time getting up from the table.
Soho was a definite winner in our book, as was our server, Courtney, and as much as I’d love to say I would try something different next time…..only if I could have it along with the fried green tomatoes!!!
