Bakersfield Tequila and Tacos

24 August, 2019 | Mexican | By: Mrs Z

While we have absolutely nothing (really) negative to say about Bakersfield Tacos, I don’t think we can think of any reason that we’d have to revisit.  The concept is great though not unique, as is evidenced by the variety of other similar places scattered throughout the area.

They were busier than I thought they’d be on a Tuesday evening, but we had no problem being seated immediately.  The host explained the menu to us and offered some suggestions, but ultimately our server was Brianna, who was very sweet and attentive.  We started with an order of chips, salsa and queso (which BTW are a ‘menu item’, not something they automatically bring to the table).  I had asked for the mildest salsa they had and as it turned out it was Verde salsa (Mr. Z was NOT a fan of it whatsoever).  The queso was very good but unfortunately, the chips were so salty that it was hard to get the true flavor of anything.  That was probably one of our only complaints….the chips tasted seriously like they came right out of a Doritos bag – nothing authentic tasting about them at all and way too salty.  I didn’t really care for the Verde salsa either and asked Brianna if that was the only mild salsa they had.  She said that they only have two kinds; the Verde and the Rojo (which is NOT mild).  After spending a good bit of time perusing the menu, we decided on the Chicken Taquitos (3 to an order) which were excellent!  Additionally, our taco order consisted of the Baja Shrimp, Carnitas, Short Rib, Al Pastor and the Pollo Asado.  Yes, it was a considerable amount of food, but the tacos are small and not overly filling.  Obviously, there were some we liked better than others and I can’t say that there were any that we did NOT like, but even though their house-made corn tortillas are one of their claims to fame; I have a serious hang up with them since they fall apart too easily.  I would totally prefer flour even though they may not taste as good.  Again, I may be the only one that has that particular hang up, but I feel pretty strongly about it since we’ve encountered it someplace else.  Tacos are meant to be picked up and eaten by hand, not with a fork and knife.  Other than those couple of issues; we thought Bakersfield Tacos was a pretty cool place.
