Burntwood Tavern

26 March, 2015 | Bistro | By: Mrs Z

We were a bit disappointed in this particular Burntwood Tavern location; having been to their Chagrin Falls place and loving it!  I guess we expected the same level of quality and it just wasn’t there.

Though they don’t have a huge menu; it was a nice selection of everything from appetizers to entrees, but we didn’t see any soups listed at all.  I had to ask our server if they offered soup – her reply was somewhat curt when she repeated two different soups they were offering that evening (why did I have to ask…..isn’t that her job to tell us what the soup(s) of the day are?). After placing our orders – I started with the spicy chickpea soup (which was very good) and as an entrée, chose the Mixed Berry Salad (a spinach salad with mixed berries, onions, feta cheese and a piece of salmon on top with an orange vinaigrette dressing).  I’m not sure what it was, but those particular flavors just didn’t work together.  The salmon was a little undercooked for my taste and the dressing didn’t have much flavor at all.  I had to pretty much force myself through it and ended up leaving some (unusual for me).  Mr. Z had the Burntwood Burger, which was definitely a knife and fork undertaking.  I’m not sure why everyone is adding a fried egg to their burgers these days since in most cases they are totally overcooked and not even noticeable – as was the case here.  There was nothing notable about this burger, other than the fact that it was messy!

Let me finish by saying that while we were waiting for our entrees, we noticed a group at another table with a basket of pretzel breadsticks and commented to each other that we didn’t see that anywhere on the menu.  We asked a passing server if we could see a menu again and when he brought it over, checked everywhere and still no pretzel breadsticks.  When we finally spotted our server, we asked her why that wasn’t on the menu under appetizers and she said “well no, it’s not on the menu…..you have to KNOW to ask for it and it’s complimentary….”!  How is one to KNOW if they’ve never been there before!?

Overall, it wasn’t a bad experience, but it’s doubtful with as many locations as they have (5) that we’d go back to this particular one again and definitely wouldn’t order the same thing!
