Cantine Bottle Shop

21 January, 2016 | Bar, Bistro, Wine Bar / Small Plates | By: Mrs Z

I will apologize in advance to those out there who have come to really like CANTINE….we simply are not fans!  Not that we had a negative experience, or that there is anything wrong with it; we just aren’t fans of limited menus and craft beers (ONLY)!

We visited Cantine with the mistaken idea that it was simply a less formal version of D’Agnese’s (owned by and situated next door) – meaning an abbreviated (Italian) menu with a more casual vibe to it.  We were wrong.  While some folks might really like the “small plate” concept; that’s pretty much all there is to it….appetizers and small plates and for those with a very “simple” palate; VERY few choices.  Not that we’re adverse to taking chances….that’s what this is all about, however, we found the menu to be extremely limited and, more importantly, we are serious fans of DOMESTIC beers and none are offered at Cantine.  Our server Frank was very gracious and did bring us several samples of different selections, so we settled on the lightest of the bunch and while it was “ok”….. give us a bottle of domestic any day!

Thankfully it was Taco Tuesday, and at $2 each; how could you go wrong.  We each had 2 tacos; I chose the Sriracha Chicken and Mr. Z had the Philly Cheesesteak.  They were both quite good.  Additionally, I started with the Autumn Salad which leaned more towards “large plate” and while good; was tossed in a dressing that was a little bland.

In retrospect, I should have done a little more research into Cantine and had I done so, at least I couldn’t knock them for not being what I expected.  Overall, the food and service is good.  The atmosphere is very industrial and somewhat cramped.  Would be go back…..very doubtful UNLESS they decided to stock those domestic beers!!!
