Mucho Bueno

28 April, 2019 | Mexican | By: Mrs Z

In spite of the fact that Mucho Bueno was listed among the 20 finalists in the “Best Mexican Restaurants in Cleveland” contest, we didn’t quite feel that this honor was justified!  I should probably start by saying that we have been regulars at a neighborhood Mexican restaurant for the past 10 years (they recently celebrated 10 years in business) and in all honesty, can’t find a single thing that we don’t absolutely love about it.  The atmosphere (the décor and the fact that it’s always spotless), the staff (every last one of them), the huge menu, the quality of the food, and not least of all the very reasonable prices!  With that being said, our decision to TRY Mucho Bueno was driven primarily by the fact that they’re relatively close to home and we had read such great reviews online; plus the fact that they beat out OUR FAVORITE in the final 20 contestants.

Upon entering the restaurant on this Tuesday, we were less than impressed.  The décor was cute but not terribly warm and inviting; and though it wasn’t a big place, there were enough tables to warrant more staff than they had working.  Also, in spite of the fact that there were quite a few empty tables, we had to wait about 10 minutes to be seated and another 10-15 to be waited on.  Though their chips and salsa were good (I thought), Mr. Z didn’t care for the salsa at all.  The menu was large and though it might not have been a fair way to judge, Mr. Z ended up ordering Mucho Bueno’s version of the same thing he usually (though not always) has at our regular place – the chicken fajitas.  He said these were really very good and, in some ways, better than the others.  Not sure why, but I couldn’t (or didn’t) do the same.  What I decided on was the Jalisco Chicken Duo, which isn’t even close to anything I usually order, consequently my judgement might be a little clouded since I didn’t care for it at all.  I didn’t dislike it, but I wouldn’t ever order it again.  As I typically do, I snagged the guacamole and refried beans that came with Mr. Z’s meal and didn’t find either to be as good as what I’m used to.  We both agreed that we didn’t care for the Mexican rice either, but didn’t find that to be a big deal since we don’t generally eat the rice anyway.  The only real ‘thumbs up’ I’d give Mucho Bueno was the margarita, which was really REALLY good!  My only complaint where it was concerned was that our server didn’t ask me what size I wanted and brought me what had to be the jumbo (at least based on the size and the price).  I have to confess that it was so good, I drank every last drop….and enjoyed it!

I’m sure I don’t have to state the obvious, but it’s doubtful that we’ll go back to Mucho Bueno.  We didn’t hate it, but since we feel it pales in comparison to our regular place, WHY……?????
