Rubin’s Restaurant and Deli

27 January, 2017 | Deli / Diner | By: Mrs Z

After several strike-outs, we ended up at Rubin’s.  Please note that while we have been aware of its existence for many years, we just haven’t chosen to check it out and probably wouldn’t have on this occasion except for the fact that for various reasons, the other choices didn’t pan out.

Also let it be said that Mr. Z enjoyed Rubin’s a bit more than I did, although truth be told, I can’t say that I found anything horribly wrong with it (except for the fact that they don’t serve beer or wine and at the end of a long workday, that was a disappointment).  One of the issues that I had was that they apparently have multiple different menus and depending on where you were seated dictated which one (besides the main menu) you got to look at.  Case in point, after looking at the main menu and the daily specials menu, I couldn’t really find anything that appealed to me, so I wound up ordering a spinach and feta cheese omelet, which was served with potatoes and toast and I ordered a side of bacon as well.  The omelet was pretty good, the potatoes were just okay (sort of powdery tasting) and the bacon definitely looked (and tasted) like it came out of a microwave.  Mr. Z had a Monte Cristo sandwich which he seemed to really enjoy, though the steak fries (which were an extra $3.12) looked like they had been frozen.  Now the problem I had with my order was that AFTER we placed our orders, I happened to spot another supplemental menu on one of the empty tables so I got up to get it and found that it had items that were not on the main menu, nor the daily specials menu.  There were several things on there that I would have ordered instead of the omelet.  Strike two (the first was the no alcohol).  I was a little put off by the fact that our waitress never mentioned this additional menu – who knows what else we might have found had we dug a little deeper!

Finally, I personally felt that they were totally overpriced for what was offered.  Mr. Z’s Monte Cristo was $11.24 plus the extra $3.12 for the fries.  That is (to me) outrageous – I don’t care how tasty it might have been!  That’s almost $16.00 for a sandwich and frozen fries!  Without beer/wine, our check (after tip) was close to $40!  I felt Rubin’s was just mediocre (at best)!
