Sully’s Irish Pub

16 May, 2014 | Irish | By: Mrs Z

I was so excited to finally be able to try this place after having driven right by it probably dozens of times and never even having noticed it.  Nor had we ever heard anyone mention it, at all.  My first attempt had been a couple of months ago (the day AFTER St. Patrick’s Day) and I was relieved that I decided on a whim to call ahead first, only to find that they were CLOSED on that day – probably to clean up after a crazy day/night.  So with much anticipation, we were finally giving it a try!!!  What a sad disappointment.

Their website claims that they are Northeast Ohio’s “most authentic Irish pub….” and if that’s the case, then I guess we’ve never had “authentic” Irish fare before!  Initially I was surprised since the place was virtually empty, with the exception of a few patrons at the bar, which I soon realized were “regulars”.  The service was ‘ok’ (easy since we were the only ones at a table).  Our server was personable enough, but we could tell he wasn’t anxious to go out of his way to be chatty.  The menu was pretty large and had a nice variety of “Irish” items, along with the traditional things that you’d find in any bar.  We asked if the corned beef was lean and after rolling his eyes, he assured us it was.  Mr. Z wanted just a “good corned beef sandwich”, which he ordered, along with a side of boxty potatoes (potato pancakes).  Initially I wanted to try the Shepherd’s Pie, but decided on corned beef and cabbage instead, which was served with mashed potatoes.  I also ordered a small side salad to start.  If the salad was any indication of what was to come, then we were in for a big disappointment.  It was nothing more than a bowl of iceberg lettuce with 1 cherry tomato and 1 slice of cucumber – that was it – and they charge $4.95 for THAT!!!  Mr. Z enjoyed his sandwich, though he said the corned beef had an “odd” flavor to it.  Now on their menu they claim to cook just about everything in Guiness, but I don’t think that would have given it a funny taste!  What he thought were going to be the typical potato pancakes, were very (for lack of a better word) strange!  Rather than being round and crispy with a potato flavor to them, they were triangular shaped and very dense, with a really unusual (neither bad nor good) taste.  Neither of us were big fans!   As for my corned beef and cabbage – not a big fan of that either!  As with his sandwich, the corned beef was tender and lean (but did have that odd flavor); however, what was supposed to be cabbage SEEMED to be nothing more than shredded iceberg lettuce with a few onions thrown in and was just barely cooked.  Honestly, I’ve had cooked cabbage many times and for the most part, it’s always been pretty much the same – this was DIFFERENT!

Overall, as excited as we were to find a “real” Irish pub close to home; we will not be going back to Sully’s.  It was a big disappointment!  However if you should want to see for yourself; they are located at:
